A working shut-off valve allows the water supply to the toilet to be stopped without shutting off water to the entire home. If the valve is seized, leaking or no longer closes completely, a minor toilet problem can become much more difficult to control.

What Does a Toilet Shut-Off Valve Do?

How to Check Whether the Valve Works

If the valve appears to be in reasonable condition, it can be turned gently to the closed position. Flush the toilet and watch the tank. Once the tank empties, it should not begin filling again if the valve has closed completely.

Why Quarter-Turn Valves Are Commonly Used
When an older toilet shut-off valve is replaced, a quarter-turn valve is often a practical choice. Instead of turning the handle several times, the water can be stopped with a single 90-degree movement.
This makes the valve faster and easier to operate during a leak. The internal design is also less prone to some of the problems associated with older multi-turn valves.
The correct valve and installation method will depend on the existing pipe material, its condition and the available space beside the toilet.
Should the Supply Line Be Replaced Too?
The flexible line connecting the valve to the toilet should be inspected whenever the shut-off valve is serviced. Cracking, corrosion, damaged fittings or signs of leakage can indicate that the line should also be replaced.
An older supply line may not be worth reconnecting after a new valve is installed. Replacing both components at the same time can reduce the chance of another weak point developing between the plumbing supply and the toilet.
The new line must be the correct length and installed without twisting, stretching or overtightening the connections.
A Small Upgrade That Can Prevent a Larger Problem
