Toilet and Shut-Off Valve Installation

Replacing a toilet involves more than setting a new fixture in place. The toilet flange, seal, water supply line and shut-off valve should all be checked before the new toilet is secured and tested.

For this recent McPipe Plumbing project, the old toilet was removed, the flange and water connection were inspected, and a new toilet and shut-off valve were installed. Final testing confirmed that the toilet was stable, flushing properly and free of leaks.

Removing the Existing Toilet

The first step was to shut off the water supply, disconnect the supply line and drain the existing toilet. Once the toilet was removed, the area around the drain opening could be cleaned and inspected.

Removing the old fixture also provided access to the toilet flange. This connection helps secure the toilet to the floor and supports the seal between the toilet and the drainpipe. A damaged or loose flange can cause movement, leaks and damage to the surrounding flooring.

Inspecting the Toilet Flange and Water Connection

Before installing the new toilet, the flange and surrounding area were checked for signs of damage or deterioration. The water connection and shut-off valve were also inspected.

A reliable shut-off valve is important because it allows the water supply to the toilet to be turned off without affecting the rest of the home. Older valves may become stiff, corroded or difficult to close completely. Replacing a worn valve during the toilet installation helps reduce the chance of future leaks and makes servicing the fixture easier.

Installing the New Toilet

After the connections were prepared, a new seal was positioned and the toilet was carefully set over the flange. The toilet was then secured, connected to the water supply and checked to ensure it sat firmly without rocking.

The new shut-off valve and supply connection were also tested under normal water pressure. The toilet was flushed several times to confirm proper operation and check for leaks around the base, tank and water connections.
