The customer’s older washing-machine valves and the completed hot and cold laundry-valve replacement.

A customer recently asked McPipe Plumbing to replace the older hot and cold water valves supplying their washing machine. The existing laundry valves were removed and replaced with new valves, giving the customer more reliable control over both water lines.

Laundry valves are easy to overlook because they usually remain open behind the washing machine. However, they need to work properly if a hose leaks, the appliance is replaced or the water must be shut off quickly.

Why Laundry Shut-Off Valves Matter

A washing machine uses separate hot and cold water lines. Each line has a shut-off valve that allows the water to be stopped without turning off the supply to the entire home.

If a washer hose splits or a connection begins leaking, working valves can limit the amount of water released. Older valves may become difficult to turn, leak around the handle or fail to close completely after years without being used.

If the piping around the laundry area is also leaking or damaged, McPipe Plumbing provides pipe repair and replacement for laundry rooms and other areas of the home.

Removing the Older Laundry Valves

Before the existing valves could be removed, the home’s water supply had to be shut off and the lines drained. The older hot and cold valves were then disconnected from the water lines and washing-machine hoses.

The exposed piping was checked before the replacement valves were installed. This is important because corrosion, damaged threads or weakened pipe connections can affect how well the new valves seal.

A dependable main water shut-off valve is also important when fixture valves or water lines need to be repaired.

Installing the New Valves

The new hot and cold laundry valves were connected to the existing supply lines and positioned so the handles and hose connections remained accessible.

The washing-machine hoses were then reconnected. Each connection needed to be secure without being overtightened, which can damage the hose washers or connection threads.

Testing the New Laundry Valves

After the installation was complete, the water supply was restored gradually. Both valves and the connected hoses were checked under normal water pressure.

The testing included opening and closing each valve, checking around the handles and connections, and confirming that the washing machine was receiving both hot and cold water. The surrounding area was then inspected for moisture before the appliance was returned to regular use.

Signs Laundry Valves May Need Replacement

Consider having your washing-machine valves inspected if:

  • The handles are difficult to turn

  • A valve will not close completely

  • Water leaks around the handle or hose connection

  • There is corrosion or mineral buildup

  • The valves have not been operated in many years

  • The hoses are being replaced but the valves appear worn

  • The washing machine is being moved or replaced

A stiff valve should not be forced. Applying too much pressure to an older valve or pipe connection can cause it to break or begin leaking.

Check the Hoses at the Same Time

Laundry hoses should be inspected whenever the valves are serviced. Look for cracks, bulges, rust around the connectors or dampness near either end.

The hoses should also have enough room behind the washing machine so they are not sharply bent, crushed or pulled tightly against the connections. If the hoses show signs of deterioration, replacing them at the same time as the valves can help reduce the risk of a future leak.
