Replacing a 30-Year-Old Kitchen Sink with a Stainless Steel Single-Bowl Sink

A customer recently asked McPipe Plumbing to replace an original kitchen sink that had been in use for approximately 30 years. The older double-bowl sink and faucet were removed and replaced with a modern stainless steel single-bowl sink, a high-arc faucet and a protective sink grid.
The upgrade gave the customer a larger, uninterrupted washing area while updating the appearance and function of the kitchen.
Removing the Original Kitchen Sink
The water supply was shut off before disconnecting the faucet, drain and water lines beneath the sink. The original double-bowl fixture could then be separated from the countertop and carefully removed.
Once the old sink was out, the countertop opening and accessible plumbing were inspected. Measurements are especially important when replacing a sink without replacing the surrounding countertop. The new fixture must fit the available opening while leaving enough surface around the edge to support and seal it properly.
Why Choose a Single-Bowl Kitchen Sink?
A single-bowl sink provides one large washing area rather than dividing the available space between two smaller basins. This can make it easier to wash larger cookware, roasting pans, baking sheets and other items that may not fit comfortably in one side of a double sink.
Homeowners may choose a single-bowl sink for:
More room to wash oversized cookware
A cleaner and more open appearance
Easier cleaning without a divider between the bowls
Better use of the available sink width
Additional room beneath the sink because there is only one main drain connection
A double-bowl sink can still be useful for separating washing and rinsing. The better choice depends on how the kitchen is used and the homeowner’s personal preference.
Installing the Stainless Steel Sink
The new stainless steel sink was positioned in the existing countertop and sealed around the rim. It was then secured to prevent movement and help keep water from getting underneath the edge.
Stainless steel is a popular kitchen-sink material because it is durable, relatively easy to maintain and works with a wide range of kitchen styles. The removable grid helps protect the bottom of the sink from scratches while keeping dishes slightly raised above the drain.
Adding the New Kitchen Faucet
The old faucet was replaced with a high-arc model that provides more clearance above the sink. This is helpful when filling tall pots or washing larger items.
The faucet was secured to the sink and connected to the existing hot and cold water supplies. The drain assembly was also connected to the plumbing beneath the sink.
Testing the Finished Installation
After the sink and faucet were installed, the water was turned back on and the plumbing was tested. The faucet, drain, water-supply connections and seals around the sink were checked for proper operation and leaks.
The drain also needed to be observed while the basin was filled and emptied. Testing the system with a larger volume of water can reveal a loose drain connection that may not be noticeable when the faucet is only running lightly.
When Is It Time to Replace a Kitchen Sink?
A kitchen sink may be worth replacing when it has:
Cracks, chips or permanent staining
Rust or corrosion around the drain
Leaks beneath the rim or basin
A damaged finish that has become difficult to clean
A layout that no longer suits how the kitchen is used
An outdated faucet or plumbing components requiring repeated repairs
Some sink problems can be repaired without replacing the fixture. However, when an older sink is worn or no longer practical, replacement provides an opportunity to update the faucet, drain and accessible connections at the same time.
