The burst copper outdoor-faucet line and the new pipe section installed by McPipe Plumbing.

A homeowner in Thornhill contacted McPipe Plumbing after the copper line supplying an outdoor faucet froze and burst. The line had not been winterized before temperatures dropped, leaving water trapped inside the pipe.

McPipe Plumbing responded on short notice, removed the split section of copper and installed a new section of pipe. The repaired line was then tested before the outdoor faucet was returned to use.

Why Outdoor Faucet Pipes Freeze

Water expands when it freezes. If water remains trapped inside an outdoor faucet or the pipe leading to it, freezing temperatures can place enough pressure on the copper to split the pipe.

The damage may happen during the winter but remain unnoticed until the weather warms or the outdoor faucet is turned on again. Once water begins flowing through the line, it can escape through the damaged section and enter the wall, basement or area around the foundation.

Removing the Burst Copper Pipe

The water supply was shut off and the damaged line was drained. The split section of copper could then be cut out while the surrounding pipe was checked for additional damage.

A new piece of copper was measured and installed between the remaining sections. The repaired connections were secured and allowed to cool before the water was restored.

McPipe Plumbing provides frozen and burst pipe repair for damaged copper lines, outdoor faucets and other household plumbing.

Testing the New Pipe

After the new copper section was installed, the water was turned back on gradually. The new joints and the surrounding pipe were checked for leaks under normal pressure.

The outdoor faucet was also operated to confirm that water was flowing properly and that no additional leaks appeared along the accessible line.

Signs an Outdoor Faucet Pipe Has Burst

A frozen pipe is not always obvious. Watch for:

  • Water appearing inside the home when the outdoor faucet is used

  • Dampness around the foundation or basement wall

  • A visible crack or split in the copper pipe

  • Reduced or uneven flow from the outdoor tap

  • Water stains on drywall, insulation or framing

  • The sound of water running behind a wall

  • A sudden drop in water pressure

If water is actively leaking, close the shut-off valve for the outdoor line if one is available. If the leak cannot be isolated, turn off the home’s main water supply. McPipe Plumbing’s guide explains why a dependable main water shut-off valve is important during a plumbing emergency.

How to Help Prevent Outdoor Pipes from Freezing

Outdoor plumbing should be prepared before freezing temperatures arrive. Depending on how the faucet is installed, winter preparation may involve:

  • Disconnecting garden hoses, splitters and watering accessories

  • Closing the interior shut-off valve supplying the outdoor faucet

  • Opening the outdoor tap to release trapped water

  • Draining the line through its bleeder or drain cap, if provided

  • Checking the shut-off valve and pipe for existing leaks

  • Confirming that a frost-free faucet can drain properly

Even a frost-free outdoor faucet can freeze if a hose remains connected and prevents water from draining. An insulated faucet cover may provide some added protection, but it does not replace properly shutting off and draining a line designed for winterization.

If you are uncertain how your outdoor faucet is connected, have the plumbing checked before winter so you know which valve controls it and how the line should be drained.

Should the Pipe or the Outdoor Faucet Be Replaced?

If the damage is limited to one section and the surrounding copper remains in good condition, the burst area may be repairable without replacing the complete outdoor-faucet assembly.

Replacement may make more sense when the faucet itself is leaking, the shut-off valve no longer works, the pipe has frozen more than once or the existing setup cannot be drained properly. The condition and location of the plumbing should guide the repair.
